Belmont College Prepared to Provide Training and Education for Intel Ohio Semiconductor Manufacturing Jobs

5

Belmont College recently issued the following announcement.

In an announcement today, Governor DeWine announced that Intel, a great American company, is partnering with the state of Ohio to bring a revolutionizing investment in semiconductor (or “chip”) manufacturing to the state—a brand new, vital industry to Ohio and the Midwest that will supercharge Ohio’s economy. This project reverses decades of offshoring of American manufacturing, which has contributed to a shortage of domestically-produced chips and left the U.S. vulnerable to supply chain disruptions.

“As a community and technical college, Belmont is well prepared to provide the training and education needed for the jobs that will be coming to the state,” said Dr. Paul Gasparro, President. “This project will have a tremendous impact at the national, state, and local levels. The job prospects created by Intel, and support industries, will need essential highly trained employees and we are prepared to assist with that training. At Belmont, we offer programs in Computer and Information Technology, including Cisco Networking, Engineering Technology, Business and Accounting, Industrial Trades, and Health Sciences, to name a few. We are perfectly positioned to help prepare our local workforce and are thrilled for this incredible opportunity for the residents of our state. This project will undoubtably provide a positive impact on our economy.”

He added, “We are appreciative to Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jon Husted, and JobsOhio for their hard work and commitment in bringing this incredible opportunity to the state of Ohio.”

According to the Governor’s DeWine’s office, this investment in the state will generate more than 20,000 jobs:

  • 3,000 Intel jobs earning an average of $135,000 per year (plus benefits)
  • 7,000 construction jobs over the course of the build
  • Tens of thousands of additional support jobs including electricians, engineers, supplier jobs, and jobs in restaurants, healthcare, housing, entertainment and more.

Governor’s DeWine’s office noted that all Ohio institutions of higher education will benefit and have an important role to play in this project—whether it’s research and innovation at Ohio’s four-year colleges and universities or new and innovative curricula and training at our two-year community colleges and vocational and technical schools. According to the Governor’s Office, Intel has indicated it plans to make significant investments over the next decade in partnership with Ohio universities, community colleges and the U.S. National Science Foundation. These partnerships will span a range of activities, from collaborative research projects to building semiconductor-specific curricula for associate and undergraduate degree programs.

“Ohio’s community colleges applaud Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jon Husted and JobsOhio for bringing Intel, with their extraordinary investment, world-leading technologies and well-paying jobs to Ohio,” said Jack Hershey, President, Ohio Association of Community Colleges. “By every measure, this is an historic moment for our state, a game-changing success that will bring lasting benefits to every corner of Ohio.”

Hershey continued, “The job opportunities generated by Intel and by other high-tech industries sure to follow will require a strong and sustainable pipeline of skilled workers ready and able to seize those opportunities. Preparing that workforce will be an ongoing challenge, requiring the very best, coordinated efforts from every level of education in our state. Ohio’s 23 community colleges are well-prepared for that challenge and eager to collaborate to help Intel and other industries of the future thrive here by developing the talent they need to succeed.”
