Women's Basketball Opens A-10 Play At George Mason Sunday

The University of Dayton women's basketball team will open up the Atlantic 10 portion of the schedule with a road game at George Mason Sunday, Jan. 1 at 3 p.m.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton heads into conference play with a 1-10 record overall and coming off its first victory of the season Thursday. The Flyers are 0-3 in road games this season.

Head coach Tamika Williams-Jeter is in her first season in charge of her hometown Flyers, coming over after a year at Wittenberg. She has assistant coaching stops at Kansas, Kentucky, Penn State, and Ohio State.

As a team this year, the Flyers are averaging 64.5 points per game and giving up 69.9 points to opposing teams. Dayton is shooting 41.0 percent overall, 33.0 percent from three point range, and 73.7 percent from the free throw line. UD benefits from a +5.9 rebounding margin as well.

Dayton is led by redshirt junior Destiny Bohanon with 12.8 points per game while senior Mariah Perez is adding 11.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Sophomore Arianna Smith made her season debut last outing and had 10 points to go with nine boards.

SCOUTING GEORGE MASON
George Mason also tips-off A-10 play this weekend with a 7-6 record on the year and 6-1 home mark. The Patriots are coming off a loss to Stephen F. Austin, but had won four prior to that.

Head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis is in her second season at GMU, but has 23 seasons of Division I head coaching experience.

As a team, the Patriots are scoring 61.8 points per outing and giving up 63.5 points to opponents. George Mason is shooting 39.2 percent from the field, 28.1 percent from behind the arc, and 62.4 percent from the charity stripe.

Leading the way for the Patriots is Taylor Jameson with 14.8 points per game while Sonia Smith is chipping in 9.4 points per contest. Nalani Kaysia is the main rebounder with 5.5 per game.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton earned its first win of the season in a dominating Cedarville 94-58 at home. The Flyers had four players in double digits including 20 points from Mariah Perez and an 18-point, 11-assist double-double by Sydney Freeman.

George Mason suffered a tough 90-62 defeat to Stephen F. Austin in Miami on Dec. 20 at the FIU Holiday Hoops Showdown. Riley Childs was the only Patriot in double digits with 10 points in the effort.

SERIES HISTORY
Dayton and George Mason have met 11 times previously with the Flyers holding a 9-2 advantage over the Patriots. UD has won three straight including last year's meeting on Feb. 5, 84-44.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
As a team, Dayton ranks 63rd overall in in the country in rebounds per game and 73rd in defensive rebounding. Individually, Destiny Bohanon ranks 13th in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio and 16th in three-point percentage while Mariah Perez is 18th in offensive rebounds per game.

FREEMAN GETS 1,000TH POINT
Senior guard Sydney Freeman reached the 1,000-point mark in her collegiate career with a made three at the 2:55 mark in the first quarter of the game at Toledo on Dec. 11. She needed just three points entering the contest and finished the night with five points.

DOUBLING-UP
Senior Mariah Perez already has four double-doubles this season, giving her five for her career. She recorded double-digit points and rebounds in games against Northern Kentucky, Kentucky, Florida, and Fairfield already this season. On top of that, she was one point shy of another against Ohio with nine points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Teammates Maliya Perry and Sydney Freeman have also recorded double-doubles this year.

The Flyers remain on the road in A-10 play, heading to Duquesne Thursday, Jan. 5 at 6 p.m.
