How It Happened
The Franciscan Women's Swimming & Diving got back into competition after nearly two months between meets. They traveled to Hiram to take on the host, Hiram, and a PAC opponent in Washington & Jefferson. The Barons would have a very strong showing with a pair of wins in their first meet of the 2023 calendar year. Franciscan is now 6-4 on the season with a 2-2 mark in PAC matchups.

The Barons started off the day with a win in the 200 meter medley relay. The team of Lucia Garvey, Olivia Mete, Jessica Stiles, and Bridget Bartosik combined to swim a time of 2:18.81 to come from behind and secure their first event win of the day. In the next event, the 1500 meter freestyle, Katarina Antonov made her collegiate swimming debut with a win. She swam a time of 19:54.58 to lead the way. Teammates Kate Kinst and Celia Van Den Wymelenburg placed second and fourth to rack up more team points.

Franciscan's next win came in the 100 meter backstroke, as Lucia Garvey beat the field by nearly five seconds. Jessica Stiles would place second to give Franciscan a nice-sized lead after just a handful of events. Olive Mete then picked up her first individual win of the day in the 200 meter butterfly. with a time of 2:55.79. Kinst kept up the success with a win in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of just over 30 seconds. Garvey would then get her second individual win of the day with a time of 2:44.31 in the 200 meter backstroke. The Barons last win of the day came from Antonov. She swam a time of 2:52.66 in the 200 IM which just edged out her teammate, Kate Kinst.

Up Next
Franciscan will look to keep up the success next weekend at Penn St. Altoona. Along with Penn St. Altoona, they will take on Pitt.-Bradford and Chatham. This will be another good test to see where the Barons rank among some area schools and one PAC opponent in Chatham.
