State Representatives Adam Holmes and Cecil Thomas have announced the signing of House Bill 4, which establishes September 19th as Stillbirth Prevention Day in Ohio. The new law seeks to educate residents about stillbirths and improve healthcare resources for expectant mothers.
Rep. Holmes expressed his hope that the legislation would enhance advocacy efforts around this significant issue, stating, "I am so honored to help increase advocacy around such a critical issue in our society, and I hope it will raise awareness of the pricelessness of every human life."
Rep. Thomas addressed families affected by stillbirths, saying, "To the families who have experienced the unimaginable pain of stillbirth, this bill is the state’s recognition of your loss and a symbol of our ongoing commitment to prevention." He added that they stand with these families and are committed to ensuring others do not endure similar heartbreak.
The bill received unanimous support from both chambers of the Ohio General Assembly, highlighting a bipartisan dedication to tackling and preventing stillbirths statewide.
Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control indicate that one in 175 births in the United States results in stillbirth each year, equating to approximately 21,000 cases annually. In Ohio alone, 760 babies were lost to stillbirth in 2021, exceeding the national average.
